In 1961, George Hurst, the founder of Hurst Performance Product Co., invented the Jaws of Life, a hydraulic rescue tool designed to free drivers from vehicle wrecks at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Hurst was motivated to develop this tool after observing a rescue team take over an hour to extricate a driver from a car crash. Convinced that a more efficient solution was needed, he set out to create a tool that could operate faster than the circular saws typically used at the time.
